A long iron or fairway wood from the tee down the left side of the fairway will give you a good angle to the green with a short iron.
A fine opening risk and reward hole. The long hitter can try for the green, over the trees, but beware of thick rough ahead and to the right. The conservative way is hit an iron to the bottom of the hill leaving about a hundred yards to the green, guarded by a steep bunker to the right and the thick grass of the racecourse to the left.
Try to hit the ball far enough to get beyond the two bunkers at the bottom of the hill. Left is better than right. Then aim for the left, front of the green, wherever the flag is. It is further uphill than you think
This hole was originally called the first. The naming of holes is a regular practice in Scotland and has been extended to some courses in England.
In 1905 it was 255 yds and was lengthened to 315 yds by 1978
